Both men come back from service in World War II altered, struggling to readjust to civilian life. To evade legal repercussions, they venture into starting a bookmaking enterprise, engaging heavily in illicit gambling activities which not only boost their riches but also make them more conspicuous targets for law enforcement. Their actions ultimately plunge everything into turmoil leading towards escalating disorder.
