Taking on a new ensemble, fans have been eagerly awaiting The Conjuring: Last Rites’ unveiling. Now, the trailer has confirmed the real-life tale.
The Smurl Haunting verified in The Conjuring: Last Rites trailer
The Smurl Haunting, which took place between 1974-1989, is set to be the subject of The Conjuring: Last Rites, as confirmed by the trailer below.
Jack and Janet Smurl from West Pittston, Pennsylvania, claimed that their residence was haunted by a demonic entity during this timeframe. This malevolent force purportedly created intense sounds and foul smells, hurled their canine against a wall, jolted their bedframe violently, knocked one of their daughters down a staircase, and subjected family members to physical and sexual attacks.
The Warrens were brought in in 1986, with Ed confirming the demon was “very powerful.” He also claimed he felt a drop in temperature and saw a “dark mass” from in the home, with the demon once leaving a message on a mirror telling him to “get out.”
The investigation went on for months, with The Warrens trying to get the demon to leave by playing religious music and praying. Ed claimed to have various audiotapes of the demon knocking on walls.
Nevertheless, the Warrens were not the sole investigators to visit the Smurl residence during their stay. The family attracted significant media coverage and was examined by religious leaders, psychologists, and skeptical scientists, each group proposing different theories for what occurred.
We’ve also witnessed their tale adapted into a book titled The Haunted, which was published in the same year the Warrens visited. Additionally, there was a television movie released in 1991 under the same title.
It’s anticipated that The Conjuring: Last Rites will focus on the occurrences from 1986 instead of delving into the Smurls’ more extensive history with the house. What we know for sure is that viewers won’t get much sleep after seeing this film.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” hits theaters on September 5, 2025. Until then, you might want to explore some of the other entries in the series as well.
