Nintendo Switch 2 Boasts Unprecedented Third-Party Support, Analyst Claims Rare Since GameCube Era

The common saying goes that people purchase Nintendo consoles for the exclusive Nintendo titles. However,
Nintendo Switch 2 Direct
immediately made a significant declaration regarding games from external developers, mentioning notable titles like
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
,
Cyberpunk 2077
, and
Elden Ring
, along with an entirely fresh exclusive from FromSoftware,
The Duskbloods
So Efwebe+ inquired of industry analyst Mat Piscatella regarding the potential impact of backing third-party entities.

Traditionally, consumers buy Nintendo products primarily for playing Nintendo titles, and they usually do not turn to Nintendo consoles as their top choice when seeking out third-party games if alternative methods are available,” explains Piscatella. He continues, “This might shift with this particular console due to the provided backing and owing to its versatile design.

It’s possible we’ll see things begin to shift this time around.

Regardless of how things go, he thinks “it’s gonna be super interesting to watch, because we haven’t seen this level of support, maybe ever, but at least for a long time – maybe even since the GameCube.”

Piscatella further explains that “when it comes to that method involving partnerships with third parties… this wasn’t an area where Nintendo has heavily emphasized in previous releases.”

He believes that incorporating mouse support could make a wider variety of games accessible on Nintendo consoles. He also suggests that Nintendo may be attempting to bridge the gap between what platforms like the Steam Deck or PCs can offer and what traditional gaming consoles typically provide.

Considering the original Nintendo Switch launch lineup didn’t even include the known console-launch standby Ubisoft (outside of Just Dance 2017), which even heavily supported the Wii-U at launch, it’s impressive that the Switch 2 is getting genuine third-party blockbusters.

The Switch 2’s price might still go up because the Nintendo president mentioned that the company is rushing to avoid new tariffs.
