Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Claim Second Spot as Top-Selling Titles in the Series

Nintendo has just released its
latest quarterly financial report
, showing that the most recent titles in the Pokémon mainline series, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, have climbed to become the second-best selling games within the franchise.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, launched in November 2022, have reached sales of 26.79 million units, outpacing their predecessors from the prior generation with total sales of 26.72 million units. However, they still fall short compared to the all-time leaders within the franchise: Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue for the initial Game Boy system, whose collective sales exceed 31 million units.

As noted by Serebii webmaster Joe Merrick, Scarlet and Violet overtaking Sword and Shield is also the first time the second generation of games on a single system – in this case the Nintendo Switch – has outsold the first generation released on the same system.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet made their debut on the Nintendo Switch towards the end of 2022, garnering mixed reactions from both critics and gamers. The titles earned acclaim for introducing an expansive open world, marking a significant upgrade in game mechanics within the franchise. However, they also faced substantial backlash due to numerous technical problems such as glitches upon release and subpar graphics quality.

The games later underwent several post-release patch updates, significantly cutting down the issues faced by most players. However, both their subpar performance and visuals stayed unchanged despite the launch of additional paid content in 2023. Nintendo stated that they plan to provide updates for Scarlet and Violet moving forward.
the release of the Nintendo Switch 2
This will enable the games to leverage the enhanced capabilities of the superior hardware; however, additional specifics regarding these updates have not yet been disclosed.

This significant development precedes the launch of an all-new Pokémon title, Pokémon Legends Z-A, coming soon to both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems. This latest installment returns adventurers to the Kalos area initially seen in Pokémon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS platform. Players will explore exclusively within Lumiose City—the central hub of this region—and engage in a blend of discovery and quick-paced combat scenarios.

Pokémon Legends Z-A is set to release for both the Switch and Switch 2.
