The Old Country: Mafia, the subsequent installment in the series
Mafia franchise
is set to launch on consoles and PC this August. Notably, even though most publishers are increasing prices for new titles, the Mafia prequel will maintain a price point of $50 across all platforms.
We initially covered Mafia: The Old Country in 2022.
It was formally disclosed in
In 2024 at the Game Awards
And now it’s scheduled to release on August 8 across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam. We previously covered this in 2022; The Old Country serves as a prequel set in the early 1900s, detailing the beginnings of the mafia in Italy at that period. Check out the initial gameplay trailer for the forthcoming title here:
Hangar 13 is working on a new Mafia game. They were responsible for releasing Mafia 3 in 2016 and remaking the first game in 2020. This next installment, which serves as a prequel, won’t be labeled as an open-world or partly open-world title like some previous games in the franchise. Rather, it will offer a linear experience.
Here’s how Nick Baynes, the president of Hangar 13, described
Mafia: The Old Country in a press release from 2K
:
“Mafia: The Old Country” offers a concentrated, straightforward journey that merges high-quality narrative with an immersive depiction of the early 20th century setting and enhances the well-known “Mafia” game mechanics. This concentration enables us to present a tale characterized by grittiness, realism, harshness, and deep emotion. By embracing the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Sicily, this serves as a foundational gangster saga following our main character, Enzo Favara, through his initiation into and ascent within Don Torrisi’s criminal organization.
I personally find that perfectly acceptable. The most disappointing aspect of Mafia 3, which I generally enjoy, was the open-world checklist mechanic that seemed tacked on just because, you know, it’s an open-world game. Surely we require 40 items to gather and 200 locations to conquer and dominate. In my opinion, removing all of that clutter to concentrate on a straightforward action-adventure narrative would be quite astute. Instead of trying to outdo every other open-world title, why not carve your distinct path?
This lack of a giant open-world sandbox and no announced multiplayer might help explain the second most surprising part of this Mafia: The Old Country announcement. (The most surprising is the ability to ride horses in a Mafia game!) Mafia: The Old Country will only cost $50 when it launches in August. So uh, that’s wild, huh? It’s especially nice to see after the last few months have seen both
Nintendo
and
Microsoft announce that $80 games are now a thing
.
Of course there will be a special edition that costs $60 and comes with some digital gubbins, but even that is cheaper than the standard edition of most big games in 2025. Though this is the mafia we are dealing with. Perhaps a deal this good might have some strings attached…
