However, Pollux ended up displeasing some key figures who then punished him severely by turning him into an Avox—by removing his ability to speak through having his tongue cut off. Similar to others who became Avoxes, he received menial tasks that people from the upper echelons of society wouldn’t bother themselves with; specifically, laboring under the city within the sewage network. This gave him deep insights about navigating the underground tunnels of the Capitol which proved beneficial later as they traversed the complex maze near the conclusion of the conflict.
It remains uncertain exactly how Pollux and his sibling managed to reach District Thirteen, although assistance might have come from Plutarch Heavensbee—one of only a handful of individuals residing in the Capitol aware of this covert district believed to be obliterated years ago.
