Many factors determine a film’s success. Box-office “hits” typically refer to movies that sell numerous tickets, generating higher revenues compared to their production costs. Alternatively, a movie may achieve acclaim as a “critical hit,” receiving predominantly favorable ratings on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, winning awards can also mark a significant triumph for a motion picture, particularly when it claims honors during the yearly Academy Awards ceremony.
Any of these achievements necessitate agreement from a significant number of individuals: ticket purchasers, film reviewers, or Academy voters, as applicable. However, even in such instances, there are exceptions who diverge from the prevailing opinion. For our list featured today on ScreenCrush, this remains true.

I understand that calling a film “overrated” is inherently subjective. Not all movies on my list share exactly the same level of perceived overrating. Some were massive commercial successes, earning billions at the box office. Others received widespread acclaim from critics, being beloved by most reviewers. Several took home top honors at the Oscars—one even securing the title of Best Picture for the year.
