In October 2021, during preparations for his Western film “Rust,” director Joel Souza found himself in an unexpected situation when the firearm held by lead actor Alec Baldwin discharged unexpectedly.
It was supposed to be filled with blank cartridges, but instead, a live round ended up in the barrel. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life because of this incident, while director Bruce Souza suffered an injury to his shoulder.
He had employed Hutchins, he informed Ryan Gilbey about it.

He was struck by Hutchins: once a scene was set up, she would always inquire, “What improvements can we make?”
Following her demise, Baldwin agreed to pay compensation to her family, and the movie’s weapons handler faced imprisonment; however, Souza believes that the sector hasn’t taken any warnings seriously.
A cinematographer mentioned to him last year that live ammunition was discovered on a set in Los Angeles not long ago. “It was detected literally at the very end,” he recounted, adding that it was during a big-budget production from a major studio. The cinematographer also shared with him, “‘Things haven’t changed; everyone thinks you folks simply had bad luck.'”
