For some time, it appeared that the series wouldn’t be able to move forward smoothly into its ninth season without him. But with the toughest part behind them, the ABC emergency responder drama should consider naming a new captain moving ahead.

season 8: What makes Chimney a better successor to Nash?
On the surface, it seems like Hen should naturally succeed Nash as the leader of the 118 squad. Earlier, Nash had relied on her to act as the interim captain and handle leadership responsibilities when Vincent Gerard stepped down temporarily from his role. However, despite this clear path towards becoming the next permanent captain, having Hen take over might not adequately develop her character story in an engaging way.
The factors contributing to this involve her significant absence from the ongoing season’s events.

Additionally, during seasons three through six of the ABC series, Hen had aspirations to become a doctor. Eventually, she decided to abandon her medical pursuits to focus on her career as both a firefighter and a paramedic.
On the contrary, Chimney would make an exceptionally skilled candidate for the role of the next captain of 118.

Initially, he has spent nearly two decades with the team, accumulating substantial expertise over this period. Ever since he made his debut on the program in 2005, under Gerard’s leadership, he has provided his support continuously.
Furthermore, even though he is often considered the source of comedy throughout many seasons, one cannot overlook Chimney’s exceptional talent for staying composed during high-pressure situations. His capability to keep a level-headed approach when facing unforeseen challenges sets him apart. Clearly, such attributes could secure his position as the future leader of 118 due to their immense value.

Showrunner Tim Minear sat down with
The Hollywood Reporter
For an intimate discussion where he extensively shared his thoughts
Bobby Nash’s death
On the series and following Krause’s departure. When questioned regarding who decided to eliminate Nash, Minear responded:
I’d frame it as a group choice, but really, it was mine. Creatively speaking, if the show had become stagnant, it risked dying due to lack of momentum. Hence, I believed it necessary for certain events to occur. Without them, actions such as flipping a cruise ship, landing an aircraft on a highway, or unleashing a tidal wave on a city might come off as inconsequential—like everything will always work out fine. Therefore, it was crucial to introduce genuine dramatic consequences into the storyline.
