“I Really Love My Husband,” a well-received romantic comedy from this year’s SXSW Film Festival, has been swooped up by indie distributor Entertainment Squad.
Writer-director G.G. Hawkins’ film exploring the intricacies of contemporary romance (including an intense honeymoon period) has been acquired globally by the independent studio started by Shaked Berenson. This company plans to debut the movie theatrically across the US at some point in 2025 and will start offering international distribution rights beginning with next week’s Cannes Film Festival.
The movie features Madison Lanesey, Travis Quentin Young, Arta Gee, and Lisa Jacqueline Starrett. Reviewers have commended the film for its unfiltered and genuine depiction of a relationship along with its sharp humor. With an approval rating of 92%, it stands as “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes according to twelve critiques.
“Our goal was to capture the beauty and chaos of messy relationships – the comedy, the pain, the cringe – and set against the breathtaking backdrop of Bocas del Toro, Panamá,” said Hawkins. “The response from audiences at SXSW was overwhelming, and I’m thrilled to bring that conversation to a wider crowd.”
Producer Elle Roth-Brunet noted that the movie transforms a well-known fantasy into an unsettling, unexpected, and genuine piece—a comedy-drama with both depth and sincerity. She expressed their delight at having a collaborator who supports daring, emotionally authentic narratives.
Bernson commended the piece for its lasting impact, stating it “stays with you well past the end titles, and we’re delighted to present it both in cinemas and elsewhere.”
“I Truly Adore My Spouse” is a production of Night Breeze Productions, led by producer Roth-Brunet along with co-producers Natalie LeVeck, Jenna Mackey, Michael Polk, and Maria Laura Ventura. The executive producers for this project are Janek Ambros, Diane Brunet, Andrea Kent, and Peter Kent.
The co-executive producers listed are Tommy Cornelius, Stanley Monroe, Raven Angeline Whisnant, and Kelli A. White, along with consulting executive producer Madison Lanesey. This movie is produced in collaboration with Lu Mac Productions and New 32 Productions, alongside Pan Up Productions, BraveMaker, One Sock Pictures, Seedling Media Productions, Milagros Productions, and Assembly Line Entertainment.
Glen Reynolds from Circus Road Films handled the negotiations for the filmmakers. Hawkins is looked after by Curate and Granderson Des Rochers. Additionally, she co-hosts the “No Film School” podcast, where prominent directors and key figures in the film industry share their insights through conversations.
The latest offerings from Entertainment Squad encompass “Paper Spiders,” which features Lili Taylor and Stefania LaVie Owen, the Tribeca Audience Award-winning film “Cherry,” along with another hit from SXSW titled “Peak Season.”
