The president passed away on Thursday at the age of 78.

Born on March 24, 1947, in the Czech Republic, Bartoška attended the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts located in Brno before embarking on his professional journey. He began his theatrical work at the Divadlo Husa na Provázku theatre also based in Brno. His extensive acting career extended from the beginning of the 1970s into the late ’90s. During this period, he initiated a tenure at The Theatre on the Balustrade and appeared as an actor for the first time in cinema with the 1975 Czech film “The Playground.”

He gained recognition through various films such as “Sekal Has to Die,” “All My Loved Ones,” and “The Tiger Theory.” He received a Czech Lion Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “All My Loved Ones,” followed by a nomination in the same category the next year for “Sekal Has to Die.” His portrayal of Sokol in Jan Schmidt’s “Settlement of Crows” further elevated his standing as an actor.

Since 1994, Bartoška has held the position of president at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, collaborating closely with the event’s late former artistic director and renowned film critic, Eva Zaoralová. He is recognized for transforming this European festival—one of the continent’s oldest—into a prestigious global showcase. In acknowledgment of his contributions to art and culture, the President of the Czech Republic bestowed upon him the First-Class Medal of Merit.

In total, Bartoška has at least 175 acting roles to his credit and also served as a producer for two projects.
