It goes without saying that acclaimed actor Tom Cruise has truly made the word “impossible” his own.
Mission: Impossible
Over the years—but there’s no denying he significantly elevated the game with the eighth installment of the franchise.
Mission: Impossible — The Ultimate Accounting
In reality, Cruise disclosed that director Christopher McQuarrie of Mission: Impossible 8 had hoped for him to perform some truly impossible stunts in the forthcoming movie. To demonstrate just how challenging this task would be, Cruise decided to show McQuarrie firsthand how difficult it could get by involving him directly in one such attempt.
Cruise elaborated, “And then we discussed the storyline, and McQuarrie said, ‘I want you to cover this part to that part within just a few seconds.'”
at a recent media event
for the film in Tokyo. “I was like, ‘I can’t do that.’ He’s like, ‘Okay, well, I want you to do this and this.’ I was like, ‘I really can’t do that.'”
The specific stunt that stumped Cruise was really straightforward,” McQuarrie said. “Whenever I would explain something, he’d always respond with ‘No, you actually cannot perform that.’ However, I never hear the word ‘cannot’ from him.
But for Cruise, who has now done a whole host of
death-defying stunts
Over the years, working on the Mission: Impossible films honed his understanding of what was necessary. The actor emphasized, saying, “‘In terms of speed, due to the impact of the airflow, moving swiftly on the wing was nearly impossible.’ He explained that after a brief ‘20-minute briefing,’ McQuarrie grasped his perspective. ‘The constraints imposed by the plane’s velocity and the intense wind forces made it extremely challenging. Thus, I suggested, ”Why not experience it firsthand? Sit inside the aircraft, step onto the wing, and sense the actual pressure yourself.’ Hence, my role turned into coaching him.'”
McQuarrie turned out to really enjoy the experience. He stated, “Actually, it was fantastic. It was quite entertaining, and I would certainly do it once more without hesitation.”
Cruise also mentioned at the convention that he had prepared for this stunt over several years, emphasizing that selecting the appropriate aircraft played a crucial role in making everything function correctly.
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning will have its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which takes place from May 13 to May 24, 2025. After that, the movie will stunt its way into theaters worldwide on May 23, 2025.
