Love, Brooklyn
Follows three long-time residents of Brooklyn as they journey through their careers, relationships, losses, and friendships amidst the swiftly changing backdrop of their cherished city. Roger (played by Holland) strives to uphold his artistic principles within the profit-focused world of book publishing. Struggling financially and seeking distraction from his debts, he spends time with Casey (portrayed by Nicole Beharie), an art gallery proprietor grappling with the uncertain future of her enterprise amid the neighborhood’s rapid transformation. Though once romantically involved, they aim to build a cautious camaraderie. Concurrently, Roger finds himself drawn to Nicole (acted out by DeWanda Wise), a single mother still healing after losing her spouse but showing reluctance towards embracing new romantic possibilities.
As Nicole’s bond with Roger grows, so do their fears of vulnerability and commitment. And despite Casey’s uneasy peace with Roger, old wounds and attractions begin to reemerge. As the city changes around them, all three are forced to contend with a past that won’t let go, and a future that is anything but certain.
The cast also features Cassandra Freeman, Cadence Reese, and Roy Wood Jr. The screenplay was crafted by Paul Zimmerman for the production backed by Harper Road, Daughter Films, Fireheart Entertainment, and Umbrelic Entertainment. Besides Holland, the list of producers includes Maurice Anderson, Patrick Wengler from Harper Road, Kate Sharp from Daughter Films, and Liza Zusman. Additional executive producers were Soderbergh, Andy Steinman, Jeffrey Deary, Thomas Zambeck, Brian Katz, Anish Gupta, Lance Blaise, Alexander Leff, Holder, and Sara McFarlane.
“I’m incredibly proud of
Love, Brooklyn
!,” Holland told Efwebe. “At Harper Road, we believe there is an audience for this movie and that it will connect with people on a deep level. I wanted to make a movie that invited an audience into black characters’ real lives to witness them simply existing, without relying on overly heightened circumstances to justify the story. There’s a beauty in watching these characters living their complicated lives and I’m incredibly proud to have produced and starred in this film.”
Holland continued, “We’ve put together a stellar cast both in front of and behind the camera and created an old-fashioned film for adults that we believe audiences will enjoy! I’m thrilled and thankful to be collaborating with the Greenwich team as we launch this project into the world.”
Andy Bohn handled the negotiations for Greenwich, with CAA Media Finance supporting the filmmakers.
